Mori Kei Aesthetic
Mori Kei (森系) is a Japanese fashion style and aesthetic inspired by a woods-living lifestyle. In Japan, this style is commonly called Mori Girl (森ガール) for women or Mori Boy (森ボーイ) for men, based on the wearer’s gender, rather than the term Mori Kei (森系), which means “forest types”.It is also referred as Japanese Cottagecore. Similar styles and aesthetics are Cottagecore, Dolly Kei, Cult Party Kei, Pink House Style, Natural Kei, Bohemian, Lagenlook, Strega or Shironori. In 2024, Mori Kei is seeing a revival with communities like Yurufuwa or Dress to Impress (DTI).

Mori Kei History
Birth (2006)
In 2006, a community called Mori Girl (森ガール) was created on the Japanese social network Mixi. The name "Mori" (森), meaning "forest" in Japanese, was chosen by its manager, Choco, after a friend commented on one of her outfits, saying, "You look like you are in the forest."
Growth and decline (2009)
By 2009, the Mori Girl (森ガール) community on Mixi had grown to 35,000 members, creating a significant boom that spurred the launch of various Mori Kei magazines and brands. Popular publications such as Mori Girl Lesson and Choco's Mori Girl Book gained traction, along with the well-known brand Wonder Rocket.
Internationally, Mori Kei spread rapidly via blogs and platforms like the Mori Girls LiveJournal. By 2009, the style had already reached global audiences, with more and more bloggers, LiveJournal communities, and later platforms like Tumblr and Instagram featuring mori-inspired content.
In Japan, however, the popularity of the style began to wane in the early 2010s, leading to a decline in magazines and brands tied to Mori Kei. By 2019, the original Mixi group that helped popularize the style was deleted, and Wonder Rocket closed its Harajuku store in 2017, signaling the end of Mori Kei's peak in Japan.
Though the fashion's heyday has passed, Mori Kei still retains a loyal base of enthusiasts. Several brands (such as Yurufuwa) continue to cater to this style, albeit with updated designs to suit modern tastes. The international Mori Kei community remains active online, keeping the aesthetic alive across platforms like Tumblr, Instagram or Pinterest
Revival (2024) - Modern Mori Kei
In 2024, Mori Kei is seeing a significant comeback, with communities like Dress to Impress (DTI) on Roblox (more details below in the next section below) and users posting Mori Kei outfits on platforms like TikTok, Pinterest or YouTube.
Some brands (like Yurufuwa) and fashion enthusiasts have begun referring to the new Natural Kei trend as a modern version of mori. This newer style is simpler and widely popular across Japan. In fact, in Japan, where Mori Kei has largely faded, Natural Kei may indeed be taking its place. However, for the international community, Mori Kei, in all its variations, including classic styles, remains alive and well thanks to dedicated enthusiasts.

Mori Kei Fashion and Clothes
Mori Girl - Mori Boy
Mori Girl is a J-Fashion style that originated in 2007. It was created as a counter-style to the hyper-girly fashion trends that were popular at the time. This style is considered a form of natural fashion, inspired by themes of nature and a deep love for the forest. Mori Kei is known for its cheerful, calm, and simple aesthetic, embodying a peaceful connection with nature.
Overall style
Mori Kei has gone through various changes and trends since its peak, but its basic appearance remains consistent. The style blends natural, girly, layered, and loose clothing. A hallmark of Mori fashion is its use of loose layers that obscure the body shape, with the term "yurufuwa" (ゆるふわ) often used to describe its soft, fluffy look.
Clothing with embroidery, lace details, and light fabrics are preferred. For layering, cardigans, vests, knit scarves, and shawls are frequently used. While the style is most recognized for its off-white color schemes, earth tones and other natural colors such as navy blue, khaki, beige, and brown are also popular. Occasionally, floral hues like light pinks and blues are incorporated into the palette. Popular accessories include lace-up leather boots, tights, and woven baskets. The hair and makeup in Mori Kei also reflect the natural aesthetic. Eye shadow choices tend to be minimal, with beige, gold, and pink shades being the most popular. Blush is often applied high on the cheeks in a round shape, and eyebrows are kept thick and natural.
Mori Kei Clothing
Mori Girl, often described as "forest girls," reflects a forest-inspired lifestyle. The style features loose, light, and airy clothing, layered with warm, bulky sweaters, scarves, and sturdy boots designed for navigating the wilderness. Natural materials like cotton, linen, leather, and wool are key to this style, although other fabrics may also be used.
The color palette of Mori Kei leans heavily on neutral shades such as off-white, beige, and brown, with earth tones being a staple. Outfits often use beige as a base, but brown or tan-based combinations are also popular. Accent colors frequently include earthy greens, rose pinks, and rich browns. Other natural tones like floral hues and blues are sometimes incorporated. No matter the color scheme, it is essential that the colors feel natural, reflecting the calm and muted tones of the forest. Bright colors like neons or bold patterns, such as animal prints or stripes, are avoided. However, certain patterns that evoke nature such as floral prints, patchwork, and polka dots are embraced within Mori Kei.Mori Kei strikes a unique balance between ruggedness and delicacy: worn leather is paired with finely crocheted lace. Each outfit may tip more toward one side of the spectrum, depending on the wearer's preferences, creating a personalized approach to this fashion.
Mori Kei Hair and Makeup
Hairstyles in Mori Girl fashion are typically long, loose, and flowing, but shorter styles are also common and vary widely. Braids are especially popular, often styled loosely with a slightly messy look. Bobs are also fairly common in this style. Outside of Japan, short pixie cuts are favored by some Mori girls to create a "forest faerie" vibe. Pixie cuts even gained a brief surge in popularity in Japan. If there’s any guiding principle for hairstyles in Mori Kei, it’s to keep the look carefree and natural: if it's a little messy, all the better.
Natural hair colors are most common in a style inspired by nature, but dyed hair is also seen. Softer synthetic colors, such as light pink or natural hues like forest green, are often preferred. When it comes to makeup, Mori Kei is one of the styles where barefaced looks are the most fitting. A classic Mori Girl look includes very minimal makeup: a touch of blush on the cheeks, perhaps a light gloss on the lips, and some foundation. While more dramatic makeup looks can be acceptable, the lighter and more natural appearance is usually preferred.
Mori Kei Accessories
The most common accessory in Mori Girl fashion is undoubtedly the scarf. Big, chunky, knitted scarves wrapped snugly around the neck are an iconic staple of the style. Other popular accessories include flowers worn in the hair, rustic jewelry with nature-inspired designs, fingerless gloves, straw baskets, straw hats, and anything adorned with lace.
When it comes to footwear, brown hiking boots are the go-to choice for many Mori girls. However, other types of shoes are also common, with styles varying widely. If there is one rule in Mori Girl footwear, it is this: function over fashion. Although the style embraces a lot of variety, high stiletto heels are one of the few items rarely seen in Mori Kei.
Mori Kei Subgenres - Substyles
Casual Mori (カジュアル森)
Casual Mori fashion is a substyle of Mori Kei that creates a more relaxed, mainstream, and toned-down version of the classic Mori silhouette. This style is often absorbed into the broader Mori Kei community, and the distinction between the two can be vague and undefined. Casual Mori is frequently worn by active Mori enthusiasts when they want a simpler, more casual alternative to their usual fashion. While Casual Mori is similar to mainstream Mori Kei, it presents a more subdued appearance. There are no strict rules for what defines Casual Mori, leaving it up to the individual wearer to curate their look. However, some recurring themes are common in the style:
Common themes include:- Fewer layers: Casual mori coordinates often feature fewer layers, such as a simple sweater and a dress, or a skirt paired with a shirt, rather than the heavy layering typically seen in Mori Kei.- Natural colors and fabrics: Like traditional Mori Kei, Casual Mori emphasizes the use of natural colors, including neutral and earthy tones, along with natural fabrics.- Loose but simple silhouette: To maintain the flowing look with fewer layers, Casual Mori includes loose clothing that still gives a relaxed, effortless feel.- Incorporation of mainstream fashion pieces: Casual Mori often includes items not commonly seen in Mori Kei, such as sneakers or trainers, t-shirts, and other mainstream fashion pieces.
Dark Mori Kei - Mori Goth (ダーク森)
Dark Mori, originally known as Black Forest Mori, is a substyle of Mori Girl. The style is typically worn in a feminine way, though more masculine coordinates can sometimes be seen.
The name Dark Mori comes directly from Mori Kei. However, unlike many other Japanese fashion substyles created in Japan, Dark Mori was developed and worn mostly by international fans of the style. Although the style would not exist without Mori Kei, as it borrows heavily from the main elements, its primary distinction lies in the darker color palette.Dark Mori was rarely seen in Harajuku or on Japanese Mori forums. Instead, it was mostly created by users on Tumblr, although the exact origin remains unclear. The international community aimed to craft a darker version of the lighter Mori aesthetic, similar to how other fashion styles, like Lolita and Decora, branched out into darker substyles in Japan. Dark Mori remains active in international communities to this day.
The style is almost identical to traditional Mori Kei, with the primary difference being the color scheme. Dark Mori outfits feature black, grey, and other deep tones such as dark blues, reds, browns, and occasionally white.Occasionally, a "creepy" aesthetic is incorporated, with elements like spider webs, tattered lace, or animal bones. Pagan influences, such as crystals and pentagrams, have also been included in the past. However, since the split between Dark Mori and the Strega style, most Dark Mori coordinates no longer include these elements.
Hama Kei (浜系)
Hama Kei is a short-lived adaptation of Mori Kei designed for life by the seashore and the beach. It features fewer and lighter layers, with a focus on blue, aqua, beige, and white tones. The style often incorporates materials like denim and nautical elements such as sailor stripes and anchor motifs.
The term Hama Kei uses the Japanese word "hama" (浜), meaning beach. Another name sometimes used for this style is based on the word "umi" (海), meaning sea.Hama Kei originated from a small sub-idea seen in some magazines and brands, which featured Mori outfits with a coastal twist. This style was later picked up by the western Mori community, who began using the name Hama Kei to describe it. While it became a popular topic among international groups, it never developed into a full-fledged style.
The style is similar to Mori Kei with its emphasis on natural fabrics, colors, lace, and layers. However, it also has unique features. The color palette in Hama Kei can include traditional Mori shades like whites and creams, but often leans toward ocean-inspired colors. Dark and light blues are commonly central to the look, along with red and brown accents.
Although Hama Kei maintains the natural, layered aesthetic of Mori, the layering tends to be more minimal. Outfits might consist of a simple shirt, skirt, and perhaps a shawl. Some coordinates may feature more layering, but it isn't a requirement in Hama Kei.Nautical elements play a significant role in Hama Kei. Outfits often feature stripes, anchor necklaces, seashell accessories, fishing net shawls, and sandals, bringing the ocean theme to life.
Mori Boy (森ボーイ)
Mori Boy is a substyle of Mori Kei that aims to create a more masculine version of the fashion. Although it's one of the smaller Mori substyles, it is fairly well known. Often, Mori Boy is absorbed into the broader Mori Kei category, as some argue that there is no need to gender clothing.Similar to Mori Girl, Mori Boy fashion focuses on creating a whimsical and natural look. However, it typically features fewer delicate details, with less lace and more practical elements. The style varies in terms of layering—some outfits feature many layers, while others may include only one or two layers.
The Mori Boy palette revolves around natural colors and fabrics, with neutrals and earthy tones being the most popular. Brighter jewel tones can occasionally be seen, but they are balanced with more muted shades. Patterns like patchwork and plaid are common in Mori Boy outfits.Common themes include the use of faux or real fur, an abundance of knit sweaters, vests, and baggy pants made from natural fabrics.Hairstyles in Mori Boy fashion typically stick to natural colors and cuts. However, bolder colors and styles can also be worn, as long as they align with the overall natural aesthetic. While makeup is not required, some wearers may opt for subtle makeup, though nothing bold or noticeable.Accessories often seen in Mori Boy outfits include sturdy boots for hiking, large knit scarves, hats like newsie caps or bucket hats, and satchel-style bags.
Mori Gyaru (森ギャル)
Mori Gyaru is a substyle that blends both Gyaru and Mori Girl, incorporating elements from both fashions. It is often confused with or overlaps with other styles like Bohemian Gyaru, Himekaji@blank, Roma Gyaru, and Hime Gyaru. In fact, many Mori Gyaru outfits can be mistaken for these substyles. What sets Mori Gyaru apart is its naming and acceptance by the international Mori community. While some within the Gyaru scene might view it as a micro-trend or microstyle, its recognition by Mori Kei enthusiasts gives it a unique place in fashion.Mori Gyaru has been known by many names. The original term 森ギャル was coined in Popteen magazine by Yui Kanno. The term moru (盛る) was also used by Rin from Ageha magazine. However, the style gained most of its traction in international communities, as it faded into obscurity within the Japanese Gal scene.
Mori Gyaru has been known by many names. The original term 森ギャル was coined in Popteen magazine by Yui Kanno. The term moru (盛る) was also used by Rin from Ageha magazine. However, the style gained most of its traction in international communities, as it faded into obscurity within the Japanese Gal scene. The style itself is a natural twist on traditional Gyaru, incorporating the silhouette and shape of Gyaru with the natural, laid-back elements of Mori Kei.The color palette of Mori Gyaru focuses on natural tones such as cream, light floral colors like pink and blue, and browns. Clothing is often draped and layered, with less focus on a sexy silhouette. Common materials include lace and cotton, with frequent use of florals and ginghams.
Though Mori Gyaru typically features shorter hemlines, akin to classic Gyaru, longer hemlines like maxi dresses can also be incorporated into the style. While it maintains some traditional Gyaru elements, Mori Gyaru often tones them down. Hairstyles might still be voluminous but feature more natural looks like light waves, curls, or braids. Makeup is another example of this balance, with Mori Gyaru using more makeup than Mori Kei, but significantly less than standard Gyaru looks.Common accessories include straw hats, flowers worn in the hair, large flower crowns, baskets, berets, and leather bags.
Mori Lolita (森ロリータ)
Mori Lolita is a fusion of Mori Kei and Lolita fashion. The term was originally coined as Natural Lolita (ナチュラルロリータ) in Japan, but internationally, it became known as Mori Lolita . While the two styles share similarities, they have developed into separate aesthetics over time. The name Natural Lolita was first introduced by the brand MiELette Tautou to describe their take on Lolita fashion, inspired by Japanese natural trends like Mori Girl. It is also referred to as Natural Loli (ナチュロリ).In international circles, the style is known exclusively as Mori Lolita, which took on a different aesthetic from its Japanese counterpart.
Natural Lolita is a substyle of Lolita inspired by natural fashion trends, such as Mori Girl. Though the original brand that created this style is no longer around, other brands continue to release nature-inspired collections. The concept of Natural Lolita centers around a girl who loves fashion and lives in a small countryside town surrounded by forests. Although it takes inspiration from Mori Girl, the shared elements are minimal, typically limited to the natural look and additional layering. In many ways, the style resembles more of a natural-based Classic Lolita or Country Lolita aesthetic.Outfits in Mori Lolita focus on natural materials and comfort, featuring a relaxed silhouette with longer skirts and less voluminous petticoats. Instead of relying on prints, the style often incorporates handmade details such as embroidery and lace.As a Lolita-based substyle, Mori Lolita adheres to many traditional Lolita rules, such as the silhouette and skirt length. The Mori elements are subtle and typically appear as extra layers, such as ruffled skirts or scarves, as well as the use of natural imagery in prints—like deer, lace, and natural materials. In appearance, Mori Lolita is often similar to Country Lolita, making it difficult to distinguish. The style was a short-lived trend, primarily experimented with by international communities, and was quickly absorbed into other styles. This version of Mori Lolita was officially recognized by name by the Korean Lolita brand Haenuli in 2013.
Yama Kei (山系)
Yama Kei is the "mountain" or outdoors version of Mori Kei. It is considered both its own style and a substyle of Mori Kei. According to some sources, Yama Kei was often seen at outdoor music festivals, particularly as Mori Kei's popularity began to decline. The term Yama Kei (山系), originally known as Yama Girl (山ガール), comes from the Japanese word "yama," meaning mountain. Yama Kei differs from Mori Kei primarily in its use of layers, color schemes, and athletic gear.
In general, Yama Kei features simpler layers compared to Mori Girl. For example, a shirt with a cardigan paired with pants would be considered a Yama Kei outfit. While some looks may incorporate more layers, it’s not a requirement. Additionally, pants are more common in Yama Kei than in Mori fashion. The color palette in Yama Kei can include natural tones, similar to Mori, but also often incorporates bright colors and neons, as these are frequently seen in sportswear.Lastly, Yama Kei includes elements of athletic gear, such as vests and hiking boots, which set it apart from Mori Kei.Like Mori Kei, Yama Kei also embraces a natural lifestyle. However, Yama Kei's lifestyle is based on its namesake, focusing on outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and other mountain-related pursuits.
Mori Kei Lifestyle
For many Mori enthusiasts, Mori fashion is closely tied to a specific lifestyle. This concept was first highlighted in Choco's List and has since been embraced by both the Japanese and international communities in various ways.
Choco's List
Choco was one of the original Mori Girls, instrumental in creating the Mixi Mori Girl community. Though no longer active, her impact on the Mori fashion world has never been forgotten.Choco never shared an image of her face, and her appearance remains unknown. Instead, she used models to showcase her wardrobe and style.Choco is best known for her contributions to the original Mori Girl social media group on Mixi, where she helped shape the style. By 2009, this group had 35,000 members, and Choco became one of the most well-known figures within it. It was in this group that Choco coined the term "Mori Girl" after being told she resembled someone who lived in the forest. With her experience and leadership in the Mori Girl community, Choco went on to create the famous Choco's List, a checklist of characteristics that define Mori fashion. byu/Yurufuwa_Morikei inMoriKei
This list became an iconic guide within the Mori community, highlighting everything from fashion preferences like earthy color palettes, layering, and natural textures, to lifestyle details such as a love for handmade items and spending time in nature.Choco’s influence continues to resonate with Mori fashion lovers worldwide, and her contributions to the style remain a cornerstone of the Mori aesthetic.
Mori People Personality
Mori people are often described as childlike, embracing a lifestyle focused on slow living. They take joy in the small things in life and are unafraid to express their individuality. With a soft mood and a quiet spirit, they value simplicity and innocence, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere in everything they do.
Mori Kei Hobbies
Mori people often enjoy a wide range of hobbies that reflect their appreciation for simplicity and nature. Vintage shopping, photography, exploring old neighborhoods, discovering small local shops, visiting cafes, and journaling are all popular pastimes.
They also tend to enjoy activities like gardening, outdoor sports such as hiking, as well as baking and cooking their own food. Creative hobbies such as art, sewing, knitting, and other crafts are also common among Mori enthusiasts.
When shopping, a Mori person will choose items that bring them joy, rather than those that follow trends. They are drawn to whimsical and quirky things and enjoy spending time alone, appreciating their own company. For vacations, a trip to Scandinavia is often a dream destination for many Mori individuals. However, any place surrounded by nature is ideal. Mori people have a deep love for the outdoors and enjoy being immersed in natural environments. They are often mindful of sustainability and have a strong connection with plants and animals.
"Lifestyle" Mori People
In recent years, as Mori fashion has become less active in Japan, many international followers of the style have embraced a new form of Mori Kei that is focused purely on lifestyle. These individuals, known as Lifestyle Mori, may not wear the fashion but still actively participate in the community, embracing the values and ideals of the Mori lifestyle.
Lifestyle Debate
In the Mori community, there is ongoing debate about what constitutes a Mori lifestyle and whether or not it is inherently linked to Mori Kei.Those who advocate for the Mori lifestyle draw heavily from the aesthetic, claiming that activities and hobbies fitting within the Mori Kei aesthetic are just as important as the fashion itself. Some even argue that to truly embody Mori Kei, one must practice a lifestyle that aligns with the values of the style. However, these more extreme views are rare in the community. Most simply believe that "Lifestyle Mori" should be accepted alongside those who focus on the fashion. On the other side, opponents of the Lifestyle Mori idea argue that Mori Kei is primarily a fashion style, with lifestyle elements being secondary. The more moderate voices in this group acknowledge that while Mori Kei may not require a specific lifestyle, they still welcome Lifestyle Mori enthusiasts into the community. However, a small number of extreme viewpoints reject the lifestyle aspect altogether, though these opinions are also uncommon.
